Escallonia rubra (Red Escallonia)
(E. macrantha, Stereoxylon rubrum)This shrub is native to South America (Chile and Argentina). It has been in the ornamental trade in Australia since 1817, and may be naturalised in SA. It has naturalised overseas, including in New Zealand and the USA. There is no evidence Escallonia is invasive outside its native range. The seeds are very small and likely dispersed via wind and water, or carried on animal bodies. This species may also reproduce vegetatively.
