Dichorisandra thyrsiflora (Blue Ginger)

This herbaceous perennial is native to southern parts of Brazil. It has been in the ornamental plant trade in Australia since 1857 and has now become naturalised in NSW and QLD. There is no evidence to suggest that it is invasive anywhere in the world. There is a moderate level of climate similarity between its native range and some parts of NSW. It reproduces by seed and vegetatively by rhizomes. Seeds are dispersed by birds. Blue Ginger produces vibrant blue flowers in autumn. It grows well in warm humid conditions.
