Dianthus barbatus (Sweet William)

This biennial or short-lived perennial herb is native to Europe and western Asia. There is no data on its time in trade in Australia but the species is noted as naturalised in NSW. There is no evidence to suggest that it is invasive anywhere in the world. There is a climate similarity between its native range and parts of NSW. Sweet William produces densely packed fragrant flowers in a range of colours from white to dark red. A common plant in cottage gardens.
