Cycas revoluta (Sago Palm)

This cycad is endemic to southern parts of Japan (Ryukyu and other islands off southern Kyushu). It has been traded in Australia since 1851 and has not become naturalised in that time. Cycas revoluta is a popular ornamental species in Australia. No evidence has been found to indicate that the plant has become naturalised in any part of the world. There is a relatively high degree of climate match between its native range and some parts of NSW. This species produces copious amounts of bird-dispersed seeds. The whole plant, but especially seeds, are said to be toxic to animals.
