Naturalised in Australia

Codiaeum variegatum var. variegatum (Croton)

This evergreen shrub or small tree is native to Malaysia and southwest Pacific. It has been traded in Australia since 1851 and is noted as naturalised in QLD. However, there is no evidence to indicate that it is invasive anywhere in the world. It may be poisonous to humans if ingested in large quantities. The species can be propagated from seed but seed set is generally poor. Codiaeum variegatum has an invasive potential as it has strong mutation tendencies and is tolerant to harsh environmental conditions. It is predominantly a tropical plant and hence the climatic conditions of its native range do not match that of NSW.
