Chamaerops humilis (European Fan Palm, Dwarf Fan Palm)

(Phoenix humilis)

This shrub-like palm is native to the Mediterranean basin (including Portugal, Spain, France and Italy) and northern Africa (including Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia). European Fan Palm has become a popular landscape plant in temperate environments. The species has naturalised in South Australia, although there is no evidence it is invasive in Australia, or overseas. Reproduction is via both seed and suckering from underground rhizomes. The fleshy fruit is likely dispersed by birds and other animals.
