Celtis laevigata (Southern Hackberry)

This deciduous tree is native to south-eastern USA and north-eastern Mexico. Despite being in ornamental trade in Australia since 1947, Southern Hackberry has not naturalised. There is also no evidence that it has naturalised or become invasive in Australia or elsewhere. However, two species closely related to Southern Hackberry (Celtis australis and Celtis sinensis), are invasive in south-eastern Australia. The fleshy fruits are dispersed by mammals, birds and in water.
