Carpinus caroliniana (American Hornbeam)

This slow-growing deciduous tree is native to North America (Canada and the USA), and has been in the ornamental trade in Australia since 1941. There is no evidence this species has naturalised outside its native range. American Hornbeam reaches reproductive maturity after about 15 years. The species can also regenerate from the root crown or root sprouts. In North America, large seed crops occur every 3-5 years. The winged fruit is mainly dispersed by birds and may also be dispersed short distances by wind.
