Caesalpinia ferrea (Leopard Tree)

(Libidibia ferrea)

This evergreen tree is native to Brazil and Bolivia. Leopard Tree sheds its bark in large flakes, creating an attractive patchy effect on the trunk. It produces bright yellow bell shaped flowers in spring. The deep green leaves provide good shade year round. Despite being in the ornamental trade in Australia since 1957, the species has not naturalised. There is also no evidence that Leopard Tree has naturalised, or become invasive, elsewhere outside its native range. The species reproduces via seed.
