Buxus microphylla (Japanese Box, Little-leaf Boxwood)

(Buxus japonica, Buxus microphylla var. japonica)

This slow-growing evergreen shrub is native to Taiwan and Japan. It has been in the ornamental plant trade in Australia since 1873 and has not become naturalised in that time. Although it is recorded as invasive in Mexico, there is no evidence of its ecological impacts. There are some areas in NSW that have similar climate to the species’ native range. This species reproduces by seed and spread by water or wind. The dense growth of Japanese Box makes it an ideal hedging plant. It has glossy, dark-green, oval foliage.
