This deciduous tree is native to Canada and the USA and has been in the ornamental plant trade in Australia since 1902. There are no records to indicate that the species has become naturalised in Australia or anywhere else outside of North America where its distribution has been expanded to areas beyond its native range due to extensive cultivation.
