Acer palmatum (Japanese Maple)

(Acer amoenum)

This deciduous tree is native to Asia (China, Korea and Japan). The species has been in the Australian plant trade since 1890 and has naturalised in NSW and VIC as well as overseas (USA, Hawaii, Canada and New Zealand). There is no evidence that Japanese Maple is invasive outside its native range. Reproduction is via seed. The winged fruit is predominately wind-dispersed. A closely related species, Acer negundo, is invasive in Australia.
