Stanhopea tigrina (Stanhopea Orchid, Tiger Orchid, Mexican Stanhopea)

(Stanhopea nigroviolacea)

Stanhopea tigrina (Stanhopea Orchid, Tiger Orchid) is an epiphytic orchid from Mexico. It is unusual in having flowers that grow from the bottom of the plant. The yellow and dark purple flowers are large, attractive and fragrant. The plants are best grown in a basket to maximise flowering. Orchids require specialist pollinators so viable seed is not produced in the wild in Australia. There is no record of the species naturalising or becoming invasive outside its native range.
