Ficus virens (White Fig, Albayi)

(Ficus infectoria var. cunninghamii, Ficus cunninghamii)

Ficus virens (White Fig, Albayi) is a deciduous tree. It starts as a strangler fig and can grow as large as 30m with extensive aerial and prop roots. It is native to northern Australia (north-east NSW around to north-west Western Australia) as well as SE Asia through to India and Pakistan. The fruit is edible. White Fig has been in trade in Australia since 1875. There is no record of it naturalising or becoming invasive beyond its native range. There are several varieties, one of which is native to northern NSW, another to NT and WA. This species has several synonyms. Fruits are white when young and purple when ripe. They are eaten by birds and mammals. It is popular as a shade tree in large parks.
