Grevillea aquifolium (Holly Grevillea)

(Grevillea aquifolium var. aquifolium)

Grevillea aquifolium, Holly Grevillea, is a shrubby or scrambling plant from 1 – 4 m endemic to South Australia and Victoria. Found in woodland, open forest and heath it is best suited to climates with a dry summer. It can struggle in humid locations such as coastal NSW and QLD. Holly Grevillea is not known to have naturalised anywhere in Australia and is not invasive anywhere globally. Holly Grevillea is so named because of its leaves, which resemble exotic holly with sharp points. It produces ‘toothbrush’ like flowers where the individual flowers are arranged in a terminal one-sided raceme. These are bright red and occur during Winter and early Summer. This plant attracts honey eating birds.
