Euphorbia pulcherrima (Poinsettia, Mexican Flame Tree)

Euphorbia pulcherrima, Poinsettia, is a shrub or small tree native to Mexico and Central America. Poinsettia, has been in the ornamental plant trade for over 50 years and has not naturalised in Australia in that time. Poinsettia is not considered invasive anywhere in Australia, or elsewhere globally. The plant has become a popular Christmas ornamental plant owing to its striking red and green foliage. The plant has dark green leaves and vibrant red bracts, which are often confused for flower petals. The flowers are inconspicuous. There are other varieties available with different coloured bracts. Poinsettias can grow up to about 4 metres when they are planted in the garden. Wear gloves when pruning and wash your hands afterwards because, like all members of the Euphorbia family, Poinsettias produce a white, milky, sticky sap that can cause skin allergies.
