Tilia americana (American Basswood, American Linden)

(Tilia caroliniana)

Tilia americana (American Basswood) is a deciduous tree from North America with a spreading crown growing 23-40m. It is grown as a shade and street tree. It produces small, but abundant, fragrant flowers. It is also grown in plantations as a source of lumber. It is an important food source for honey bees and other insect pollinators. There is no record of it becoming naturalised beyond its native range or invasive anywhere. Tilia reproduces by seed – samaras that are dispersed by wind.
