Stewartia sinensis (Chinese Stewartia)

(Stewartia gemmata)

Chinese Stewartia (Stewartia sinensis) is a small, deciduous tree or large shrub with and open spreading habit and peeling papery cinnamon-brown bark. The dark green leaves turn crimson in autumn. Slightly fragrant white flowers appear in mid summer and are followed by capsules that open to release winged seeds. It is native to Central China. Time in trade in Australia is unknown, however it is a popular ornamental tree in North America and the UK. It is not recorded as naturalised or invasive anywhere in the world.
