Platanus occidentalis (Sycamore, American Plane Tree)

Platanus occidentalis (Sycamore, American Plane Tree) is a large deciduous tree from North America. It has smooth mottled bark that peels off in flakes, and large 3-5 lobed leaves that turn yellow-brown in autumn. Sycamore has been in cultivation in Australia since 1851 and has not naturalised anywhere in Australia. It is recorded as naturalised overseas, eg France, but not invasive anywhere. Fruit and seeds are similar to other species of Plane Tree and spread long distance by wind.
