Microlaena stipoides (Weeping Grass)

(Ehrharta stipoides)

Microlaena stipoides is perennial grass native to all states and territories in Australia except NT. It is not known how long it has been in ornamental trade. However, it has not become naturalised or invasive outside of its native range in Australia. This grass has been noted as invasive in Hawaii and Reunion and has naturalised in Chile. Microlaena stipoides is a useful lawn and pasture grass in Australia. Seeds can become lodged in the skin of animals, causing damage. This grass is adapted to a range of soils and produces seeds and green growth year round.
