Magnolia liliiflora (Purple Magnolia, Lily Magnolia)

(Magnolia quinquepeta)

Magnolia liniiflora is a large deciduous shrub to 3m tall. It is grown for its large pink flowers. Various cultivars have darker pink to purple flowers. It is native to forest margins and slopes in southern-central China. Purple Magnolia has been in trade in Australia since 1803 and there is no record that it has become naturalised. Although possibly naturalised in India, there is no evidence that it is invasive anywhere in the world.
